Winchester Walking Football Club’s over-65s have booked their place in the Walking Football Association National Cup Finals after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Plymouth Argyle Community.
The South West Regional Final, played at Winchester City Football Club, was closely contested throughout, with regular drinks breaks required because of the hot conditions.
Plymouth thought they had taken the lead during a tight first half, but the goal was disallowed for a running offence.
Winchester goalkeeper Rob Nichols then produced several fine saves to keep the scores level before the hosts made the breakthrough shortly after the first drinks break.
Chris Haynes cut in from the right and struck a powerful shot beyond the Plymouth goalkeeper to put Winchester 1-0 ahead.
Plymouth began the second half strongly, although Winchester continued to threaten on the break.
The visitors eventually drew level in fortunate circumstances when a shot struck the post and rebounded into the net off the Winchester goalkeeper.
Winchester responded positively and gradually began to gain the upper hand, with Andy Bramley going close on several occasions as the pressure mounted.
The decisive moment came when Plymouth had a player sent off for fouling Winchester’s Steve Nash as he went through on goal.
Barry Poffley, the club’s leading scorer, calmly converted the resulting penalty to restore Winchester’s lead.
With a numerical advantage, Winchester controlled the closing stages, retaining possession for long periods and preventing Plymouth from finding a way back into the match.
The final whistle confirmed a memorable 2-1 victory over a strong and well-organised Plymouth side and secured Winchester’s place in the national finals in Nottingham.
Winchester Walking Football Club thanked its sponsor, Winchester Mobility, for its continued support and Winchester City Football Club for the use of its facilities.
