A walking football team has been crowned the champions of Wales after an emotional victory at the national play-off finals.
Coedpoeth WFC’s over-70s qualified for the finals in Newtown after going unbeaten through 24 games to win the North Wales league.
At Newtown, they faced the four top teams from the South Wales leagues plus defending champions Deeside, who were this year’s North Wales runners-up.
Going into the final round of games, four of the six teams were in with a chance of lifting the trophy. But it was Coedpoeth who came out on top, beating Merthyr 2-0 to pip Deeside to the title.

The two sides finished level on points, but the local side won the title having scored more goals over the course of the day.
The victory was especially poignant for the Coedpoeth players. On the eve of the competition, they received the news that their striker Richie Roberts, who had been battling against illness for several months, had passed away.

Before play began, players and officials from all the teams stood around the centre circle and observed a minute’s silence in memory of Mr Roberts.
Coedpoeth captain Alan Edwards said: “We were determined to bring the trophy home for Richie. He would have been proud of the way we played. We did it for him.
“It was a very emotional moment and a fitting tribute, having the walking football community from across Wales come together to remember Richie.”
