Basingstoke walking football event raises £2,900 for charity

A walking football event raised thousands for a prostate cancer charity.

Basingstoke Sports Centre Walking Football Group’s Walking Football Fiesta raised more than £2,900 for Prostate Cancer UK.

The event, held on Saturday, March 14, gathered more than 50 players who participated in a rotation of seven-minute matches with three-minute breaks.

An event spokesperson said: “All the matches were played in the true spirit and rules of walking football, although as usual there were a few aches and pains the following morning.”

Local teams attending included Basingstoke Women’s Walking Football Team, Tadley Statin Strollers, Hartley Wintney FC and the University of the Third Age (U3A) squad, along with various teams from the sports centre.

The day was supported by Paul Shearman and the team at Better / Basingstoke Sports Centre, as well as Prostate Cancer UK and the North Hants Prostate Cancer Support Group.

The organisations provided valuable advice and information on prostate cancer to players and supporters.

A raffle contributed more than £520 to the total funds raised.

Men aged 50 and above, and women aged 40 and above, can join these sessions by contacting the sports centre.
