Tranmere Rovers in the Community (TRIC) have received a generous donation to support their Dementia-Friendly Social Afternoon sessions, thanks to the fundraising efforts of walking football participant Alan Robinson.

Alan, who plays in TRIC’s Men’s Over-65s Walking Football group, raised an impressive £1,350 in support of the initiative. He is the nephew of former Tranmere Rovers player Roy Parnell and was inspired to give back after seeing the positive impact the sessions had on his uncle.

Roy, who also represented Everton during his playing career, was once a regular attendee at the social afternoons. However, he has recently been unable to attend due to the progression of dementia. Alan was moved by how much Roy valued the sessions and wanted to ensure others could continue to benefit from them.

To raise the funds, Alan organised a series of community-driven activities, including raffles featuring signed shirts from Tranmere Rovers and Everton, as well as “spot the ball” competitions and events at local pubs and social gatherings.

Alan recently visited one of the Dementia-Friendly Social Afternoons, where he met with participants and formally presented the donation. The cheque was received on behalf of TRIC by session co-ordinator Shirley Warring.

Speaking about the motivation behind the fundraising, Alan said: “Roy always spoke so fondly about the sessions, even when he could no longer attend. We wanted to give something back to help support the group—whether that’s for refreshments, equipment, or activities that make a difference to those attending.”
