Romford Walking Football’s Over-65s and Over-60s sides enjoyed a successful spell of action recently, collecting impressive results in league and cup competitions.

Neil Clements, Sean Mallett, Paul Poole, captain Tom Lemon, Paul McAuliffe, Liam Flanagan, Bob Driscoll and Charlie Waters finished their Essex Walking Football League Second Division campaign with two wins and a draw.

They began with a 1-0 win over Billericay Town after dominating the match.

Irish international Liam Flanagan settled it in the first half with a stunning strike from just inside the opposition half.

Romford created more chances but could not extend their lead.

Romford dominated again against Stones Athletic.

Flanagan again made the difference, firing home a powerful long-range effort to give Romford a second straight 1-0 win.

The final league match against Concord Rangers ended in frustration.

Romford hit the woodwork three times and created plenty of chances but were held to a goalless draw.

Manager Bob Callis praised debutants Flanagan and McAuliffe, adding: “It was a great team performance on the day with two wins and a draw.

“On another day it could have been nine points.

“Finishing third was a great achievement after missing out on the runners-up spot by just two points.

“The team spirit has been excellent all season and every player has given everything.”

The club’s Over-60s side also impressed during Cup Finals Day.

Bob Moore’s goal secured a 1-0 win over Heybridge Swifts before Romford drew 0-0 with Little Oakley.

Debutant Chandra Nair scored in a 1-1 draw with Billericay Blue before Neil Monks struck the winner in a 1-0 victory over Billericay White.

Romford needed to beat Concord Rangers to win the trophy but were held to a goalless draw in the final match.

Three teams finished level on nine points, but Heybridge Swifts won the cup on goal difference.

Manager Kenny Browning praised the squad’s work rate and defensive record after conceding only once all day, from a penalty.

Romford’s Over-60s league team stayed in the title race after taking eight points from four matches.

Dave King scored the winner in a 1-0 win over Chelmsford City Claret before Dave Snook’s two goals and Mick Harris’s strike secured a 3-0 victory over Chelmsford City Blue.

Harris also scored in a 1-1 draw with Beacon Hill Rovers. A 0-0 draw with Blackmore Athletic left Romford second on goal difference before a potentially decisive clash with leaders Bexley.
