Calne Town crowned champions after Almelo tAlmelo Hendrie Kruzen Cup Win

A walking football team from Wiltshire has been won an international competition.

Calne Town Walking Football Club triumphed at the 10th Almelo Hendrie Kruzen Cup in the Netherlands, bringing home the trophy from the anniversary edition of the international tournament.

The event, held in Almelo, featured teams from across Europe, including England, Belgium, Germany, France, Poland, Austria and the Netherlands.

The tournament included both men’s and women’s teams.

The Calne squad included Phil Chamberlain, Nigel Loveless, Andy Stone, Terry McCosh, Dave Howell, Rich Dennis and captain Chris Weston.

Mr Chamberlain, who also chairs the club, was praised for his organisation and planning throughout the trip.

The club also paid tribute to support team member Tina McCosh.

She acted as operations manager and tactical advisor, providing scouting reports and ensuring players were thoroughly prepared for every match.

Chris Weston, captain of Calne Town, said: “It has been an honour to lead this side.

“To win such a prestigious international tournament is a magnificent achievement.

“A special thank you must go to Phil Chamberlain, whose meticulous planning and organisation made everything possible.

“Thanks also to Tina for her tireless work and preparation, and to Sue for joining us at the business end to cheer us home.

“We represented our town with great pride.”

Calne Town started the group stage with a 1-1 draw against favourites FC Bintang Timur.

This was followed by a narrow 0-1 defeat to SSV Sung 1.

A decisive 5-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen II secured their place in the knockout rounds.

On the second day of competition, the team secured further victories against the Grimsby Ancient Mariners, Chesterfield and home side Heracles.

This earned them a place in the semi-finals.

Calne overcame Heanor 2-1 in a closely contested semi-final to reach the final.

The final against Eintracht Frankfurt finished 0-0.

With the match scoreless after full time, the result was decided on Fair Play marks.

Calne was declared the winner and crowned champions of Almelo 2026.

The club described the trip as a memorable experience that combined competitive football with the chance to build lasting friendships across borders.
