Stratford Town Walking Football Club created history this week as the over-50s team recorded their first-ever victory in the WFA Cup with an impressive 3-0 away win against Alcester Town.

World Cup-bound striker Paul Clarke scored a hat-trick, but every player put in a tremendous shift against a well-organised Alcester side that finished third in the league last season.

With an average age of 53, Stratford Town’s over-50s side continues to grow and evolve as the club develops its competitive walking football programme.

Clarke, who is also club chairman, said: “I couldn’t be prouder. We’ve been building towards this for 10 months and competitive football has finally landed.”

The club now looks forward to more Warwickshire derbies as walking football continues to grow across the county.

Attention now turns to a bumper tournament in Corby on May 31, where Stratford Town WFC will once again test themselves against strong opposition from across the region.

Meanwhile, the club’s over-60 side produced a superb team performance to claim a 1-1 friendly draw against an established Boldmere St Michael’s side who currently compete in the Birmingham Over-60s Premier League.

It was a hard fought and physical game, with both teams battling throughout, and in the end a draw was probably a fair result. Mark Ryder scored Stratford Town’s goal.
