Ken Barnard is to be made the honorary captain for Worcester Amblers Walking Football Club’s match against Kidderminster next week.

Mr Barnard is being made honorary captain for the match as a celebration of his commitment to the sport – still playing weekly at the club.

Terry Holland, chairman and team manager of Worcester Amblers Walking Football Club, said: “We have an over-70s friendly versus Kidderminster on Wednesday. Then we are off to The Raven for a swift one.

“I’ve been involved in walking football in Worcester for the last 14 to 15 years and Ken has always been involved in one group or another.

“He treks over from Malvern.

“He is a tremendous guy and a lifelong football lover, having been involved in all levels of the game. To play that regularly at 86 years old is amazing.

“There aren’t many Fridays where Ken has not come down for a game.

“As we have this friendly game, the committee thought it best to make him captain for the day to celebrate the achievement. Ken will hopefully be able to play most of the game.”

The match will kick off at 10.30am on February 25 at Perdiswell Leisure Centre’s 4G pitch.

Worcester Amblers Walking Football Club play in the Worcestershire Walking Football League, with games typically lasting 60 minutes.

Since the game is a friendly, the match will last 90 minutes with three breaks and rolling subs.

Mr Holland added: “Ken is currently unaware, but we are going to tell him tomorrow (February 20).

“We’re going to get him some captain armbands.

“I think he will be quietly happy. He’s not the kind of guy to get too excited; he does things very different.

“He will randomly disappear on holiday to Colombia and so on. He never makes a fuss; it’s the same way he plays the game.”
