More than 70 players have come together in Shoebury for a 12-hour charity football match in support of Prostate Cancer UK.

The 12-hour Walking Football Tournament saw players score more than 125 goals while raising almost £5,000 for the national charity.

The event took place at the SECAT Community Football Pitches at Shoebury High School and ran continuously from 9am until 9pm.

It was organised by the Extra Time Walking Football Charity with at least nine established teams taking part, alongside individuals who signed up specifically to support the cause.

Sian Hillis, Essex County FA football development officer, praised everyone involved in making the event happen.

She said: “This event is a fantastic example of what can be achieved when a community comes together for a worthy cause.

“The outstanding participation from teams, players, volunteers and local supporters helped create a memorable day, while raising important funds and awareness for Prostate Cancer UK.”

Despite warm conditions throughout the day, organisers said the tournament was a huge success, attracting players, volunteers and supporters from across Southend.

As well as the football itself, local businesses and residents supported the fundraiser by donating refreshments, raffle prizes and other resources.

Organisers also praised Southend East Community Academy Trust for providing the facilities and staff free of charge, helping maximise the amount of money raised for charity.

The final fundraising total is expected to be close to £5,000, with all proceeds going to Prostate Cancer UK.

Event organiser Peter Hawkins thanked those who supported the challenge from its earliest stages.

He said: “The support, teamwork and community spirit shown from the early planning stages through to the end of the event was amazing.

“The organising committee would like to say a big thank you to everyone who played a part in the event.”

Organisers hope the success of the tournament will help inspire even more people to get involved in walking football while supporting good causes across south Essex.
