Walking football program invites Mount Gambier men to boost health and connection

A new community sport initiative designed to support men’s physical and mental wellbeing will launch in Mount Gambier in April 2026, with organisers encouraging local men aged 55 and over to take part.

Led by Flinders University, the walking football (soccer) program offers a low-impact way to stay active, build friendships and reduce social isolation – a key factor linked to poorer mental health outcomes for older men in regional communities.

A partnership focused on wellbeing

The program has been developed through a collaboration between Flinders University, the Limestone Coast Local Government Association, Walking Football Adelaide and the Breakthrough Mental Health Research Foundation.

Organisers say the initiative aims to create a safe, inclusive environment where men can enjoy regular physical activity while also strengthening social ties and community connection.

What is walking football?

Walking football is a modified version of soccer tailored for older adults and people who want a gentler way to participate. The format removes many of the barriers that can keep people from joining traditional competitive sport:

  • No running
  • No body contact
  • Small-sided games to keep play manageable and enjoyable

The result is a social, accessible version of the sport that still delivers fitness benefits — without the pressure or intensity of a standard match.

Weekly sessions at Wulanda from April

The program will begin at the Wulanda Recreation and Convention Centre in April 2026, running as weekly sessions through to later in the year. Up to 100 participants are expected to join across the season.

Participants will also have the opportunity to train as referees, supported by expert guidance from Walking Football Adelaide – providing another pathway for involvement and confidence-building beyond playing….
