Football fever swept through Thorrington this week as residents at a care home laced up their trainers for a lively inter-home sports day celebrating the summer of sport.

Care home residents, staff and visitors gathered at Silversprings on Tenpenny Hill for an afternoon packed with football-themed fun.

The home welcomed teams from 11 neighbouring care homes, turning the event into a spirited tournament that brought together communities from across the region.

The day began with warm-ups and a colourful parade, as each home proudly represented a different country.

From there, the competition got underway, with residents taking part in activities such as kick bowling, sports trivia, football score challenges and a penalty shoot-out.

Staff members also joined in the action, competing in a football dribble relay, spot-kicks and even a tug of war.

Crowds cheered from the sidelines, waving flags and holding handmade signs to support their teams.

After a closely contested day, Heathlands House, representing South Korea, was crowned the overall winner.

Vicky Neal, Head of the foundation, said the support would have a lasting impact.
Ms Neal said: “Our walking football sessions in particular have become a vital lifeline for many participants, improving fitness, confidence and mobility while also tackling loneliness by creating meaningful social connections and friendships.

Among those taking part was resident Rowland Everson, 74, who relished both the competition and the sense of nostalgia the event brought.

He said: “I really enjoyed the day. It was a lot of fun participating in the games and I scored a goal!

“It was also fun watching the team members’ games.

“The hog roast was lovely. I love football and it brings back memories of going to see Colchester United with my dad – I would enjoy an orange drink while my dad had a beer.”

Silversprings manager Joanne Rix said: “Hosting an inter-home sports day has been a fantastic way to bring people together and celebrate residents’ shared love of football.

“For many, the game holds a lifetime of memories, and seeing those come to life again through playing and cheering from the sidelines has been very special.

“We’re so grateful to the residents and team members from all 12 homes for joining us and helping to create such a lively atmosphere.

“It’s been a brilliant example of how sport can connect generations and build meaningful relationships within the community.”

The sports day formed part of Care UK’s ‘Goal-den Moments’ initiative, a nationwide campaign designed to encourage older people to reminisce about their football memories while creating new shared experiences.

As part of the programme, Care UK has also supported community projects, including a donation to the Cambridge United Foundation, which delivers activities for older adults.
