My Generation News @MyGenerationGM: Salford Community Walking Football club originated in 2015 as part of the Lifeline charity, whose Alpha Sport programme was designed to help people overcome addiction problems, and walking football was seen as integral to this aim, with games then being played at Swinton Leisure Centre.
In 2017, Lifeline folded and the players decided to continue under the name Manchester Community WFC (Mancom). At some point the club moved to Salford Sports Village to practise and in 2019 it seemed logical to amend the name to Salcom. We practise on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays and also on Wednesdays at Irlam Leisure Centre.
These days our one hundred plus players come from all walks of life and backgrounds united in a mutual love of the beautiful game; and blessed to still be able to play. In addition to the above sessions there are competitive sides who compete in national cup competitions and in the country’s biggest, and best, walking football league’s at Heywood.
However, charity has always been important to the club-and the inclusion of Community in the name is not incidental. Every year the committee choose a worthy charity to support and last year it was Emmaus, who support homeless people in Salford.
Part of our training fees are donated to the cause and two inter club competitions take place specifically to raise funds, and for the majority of players who don’t win the tournaments they at least can say ‘I only took part to help the charity!’…
