Women in Dunfermline are rediscovering their passion for a kick-about through a new walking football programme.
Dunfermline Dynamos is a walking football club, established in 2021 to provide accessible sport for older adults. This month, the club launched its women’s sessions, which offer those over 40 the chance to get active, get back to the game and meet like-minded people.
Following the first session at the weekend, a representative of the group, Martin Kennedy, said:
“The feedback from the women who attended has been absolutely fantastic, and there is a real excitement around it.
“A lot of them arrived expecting walking football to be extremely slow-paced, but discovered that it’s a fast and engaging version of the game that provides great exercise and competitiveness.
“Many of the women attending had previously played football earlier in their lives and spoke about rediscovering the passion, friendships and enjoyment that football once gave them. Others were completely new to the game and were delighted by how welcoming and supportive the environment was.”
Walking football is growing in popularity across Scotland, and the Dunfermline Dynamos see “a real opportunity” to develop a game that will hopefully inspire women across the area to get involved.
Martin added: “We would love to welcome more women from across Dunfermline and West Fife to come along and experience it for themselves.”
The next event will take place on Sunday, May 17 at 2pm at Pitreavie Playing Fields on Queensferry Road.
