Dunfermline Dynamos announces new women’s walking football team

Dunfermline Dynamos Womens Walking Football has announced funding support to launch a new women’s walking football team for players over 40, opening the door for former players to fall back in love with the game. This initiative highlights the importance of Dunfermline Dynamos Womens Walking Football in promoting inclusivity and participation in sports.

Organiser Martin Kennedy explained that backing from Walking Football Scotland will cover costly venue hire as the club works towards entering the East of Scotland League, Scottish Cup and women’s festivals.

The club’s commitment to Dunfermline Dynamos Womens Walking Football aims to create a supportive environment for women looking to re-engage with football.

He believes there is a large group of women who stopped 11‑a‑side football in their 30s or 40s but still miss the sport that would be interested: “There are so many women that have just stopped – they’ve played since they were 13 or 14 and then there’s nothing.

“One former Scottish Premier League player I work with misses the comradeship of the changing room and the physical exercise – she said walking football would be ‘right up my street’.”

With no running, no physical contact, limited touches on the ball and no heading, walking football is designed to be safer and more accessible, which is “a really good selling point”.

League fixtures will also be designed around busy family lives, with only four matchdays a year, once a quarter. Mr Kennedy explained: “Once they realise it’s just training once a week, the odd wee bounce game, and league games once every quarter, it becomes something they can fit around kids, work and everything else.”

An open day is planned at Dunfermline Learning Campus after the Easter holidays, and the club is encouraging women over 40 from across Dunfermline and West Fife to register their interest.

“If we can get a league team, a recreational team and a weekly training session, it would be amazing for the women’s game here in Dunfermline and West Fife,” Kennedy added.

Walking Football Scotland Trustee, Matt Ramsay said: “We’re delighted to be partnering with Scottish Women’s Football to help grow and support the women’s game here in Scotland.

“Walking Football Scotland is fully committed to creating a clear pathway for women to stay in the game, ensuring they can keep playing at every stage of life. Just as importantly, this partnership is about raising participation levels across the country and encouraging more women to get involved, so they can reap the many physical, social and mental health benefits of walking football.

“To back this commitment, we have ringfenced £5,000 to launch a new funding opportunity, offering up to £500 to help new women’s groups get started, and that fund is now live! Walking Football Scotland is proud to play our part in helping the women’s game thrive and inspire future generations.”
