A grant from Alnwick Town Council has funded two groups that support local people living with dementia.

HospiceCare North Northumberland host the Alnwick Dementia Café and the Alnwick Dementia Walking Football group weekly at the Lindisfarne Centre and the £1,500 grant will cover their room hire for the next year. The council’s governance and community engagement committee voted unanimously to support the grant application.

Committee chair Cllr Lynda Wearn said: “These two groups run by the Hospice’s dementia care team provide an invaluable opportunity for people who live in the Alnwick area, to socialise and spend time with others who are living with dementia and their carers/relatives. The benefits of the groups cannot be underestimated as people living with dementia can often experience loneliness and social isolation.”

HospiceCare dementia support worker Sam Penberthy and dementia nurse Gill Locke accepted the grant at the Dementia Café.

Gill added “We are so grateful for this donation. It means that we can focus our resources into providing the best support and run groups free of charge. I think the smiles on everyone’s faces shows how appreciative we are.”

Alnwick Dementia Café – known as ‘Reet Canny Cuppa’ – takes place 1.30pm to 3.30pm every Thursday at the Lindisfarne Centre, Alnwick. Alnwick Dementia Walking Football – takes place 10.30-11.30 every Thursday at the Lindisfarne Centre, Alnwick.
