Chester FC’s over 50s walking football team are inviting businesses to sponsor them as they undertake their first season as the club’s official affiliated side.

The squad has enjoyed considerable success over the past two seasons as Neston Nomads winning the Cheshire Walking Football League, several tournaments and reaching regional and national finals, before being asked to represent the club for the coming season.

Players range in age from 50 to 65 and come from across Cheshire West and North Wales.

As one of the fastest-growing sports in the UK, walking football provides major physical, mental and social benefits for players over 50.

Matt Lucas, the team’s top scorer for the past two seasons, said he made the transition from traditional 11-a-side to walking football to minimise injuries and prolong his enjoyment of the game while retaining the physical and mental benefits that football can offer.

Matt said: “Walking football is just a great sport really and whether you play competitively like we do or recreationally, the benefits of moving, being active, and getting you heart rate up especially as you’re getting to an older age is really important.

“It also has the added benefit of getting out of the house, socialising and dealing with mental health barriers – getting on the football pitch is a great way to do that.”

The team is looking to secure a shirt sponsor (between £600 and £700) which will appear on official Chester FC playing kits and will help to cover the cost of a full set of shirts for the 12-man squad.

They are also looking to secure a training top sponsor (between £350 and £375) which will be worn at training sessions, warm-ups, tournaments and when travelling to fixtures.

They will kick off the season with a Lancashire league fixture on Sunday, September 27, before the first game of the Cheshire league season, which is yet to be confirmed.

The team also play in the Welsh league and will feature in various tournaments throughout the season.

Matt added: “We really want to give Chester a winning team, they’re doing well in the league at the moment and if we can do the same in walking football, hopefully that’s something that will be good for the community and the area as well.”
