Another Trophy for the Tonbridge Angels Walking Footballers

On Wednesday, our Walking Footballers took part in the annual Eastbourne tournament. We were delighted when our hosts agreed to hold a minute’s applause for club legend Steve Churcher and we thank them for this.

This is always a challenging tournament with the best of Sussex teams attending and this year proved to be no different. It was an over 50s tournament but as usual due to work commitments we sent in the main a 60s and 65 team to represent our club, with a few of our younger players.

The Greens had a successful league phase winning four games but losing one due to our own mistakes. Nevertheless, we qualified easily for the semifinals.

The Blues, using it as a training session for the national competition on Sunday, had four wins and a draw in their league phase but due to other results it meant that both Tonbridge teams met each other in the semi-final.

The Blues got off to a flying start and played probably their best game of the tournament winning 4-2 in the end. But it meant we had Angels representation in the final where they met the strongest competitors in the competition, Worthing.

The Angels were strong from the outset retaining possession and preventing very few attacks on our goal. Gradually this wore down Worthing who despite some flashes of their quality were never really in the game. Maintaining control after taking the lead the Angels came out worthy 2-0 winners to bring home our ninth trophy of the summer.

Goal scorers on the day were for the Blues: Gary Humphrey (4) Steve Elliott (2) Martin Brindley (2) Kelvin Champion, Steve Rice and Graham Smith

and for the Greens: Darren Cray (8) Andy Goodall (2) Craig Knowles and Gary Roden
