A group of Nantwich walking footballers are preparing to take their game overseas when they travel to Spain for a series of international fixtures.

Players from Nantwich Barony Walking Football will head to the Costa Blanca in October to face two Spanish walking football teams in a memorable sporting and social experience.

The squad, made up of members of Everybody Health & Leisure, will take on Santa Pola Walking Football and Los Marineros during the tour, with both matches officiated by Spanish league referees and played under UEFA walking football rules.

The trip marks a major milestone for the growing Nantwich club, which attracts players from Nantwich, Crewe, Shavington and surrounding areas to weekly sessions at the Barony Sports Complex on Barony Road.

Organiser Colin Turner said the players are looking forward to testing themselves against overseas opposition while experiencing some of the differences in how the sport is played in Spain.

“Nantwich Barony Walking Football will be welcomed by two teams on the Costa Blanca and we’re looking forward to a great week of football and friendship,” he said.

“The Spanish game includes some different rules, including touch restrictions and a blue-card system for repeated offences, so it will be an interesting challenge for our players.”

They will attend a local league match featuring Santa Pola CF before taking to the field themselves.

Following the games, players from both countries will come together for social events including a sports quiz, pool and table football.

To mark the occasion, the Nantwich side will wear a new bespoke playing kit featuring the club logo, along with custom polo shirts for evening events.

The tour has been made possible thanks in part to Colin Turner, who owns an apartment in the Costa Blanca region and helped arrange the fixtures.

Walking football continues to grow in popularity across Cheshire, providing an opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to stay active, socialise and enjoy the sport in a friendly environment.

Nantwich Barony Walking Football holds sessions on the 3G pitch at Barony Sports Complex every Wednesday from 3pm to 4pm and Thursday from 5pm to 6pm.
