Walking football group receives funding boost

Abbeymead Rovers Walking Football has been awarded £2,500 from Gloucestershire County Council’s Grassroots Neighbourhood Fund.

The money will be used to secure extra pitch time so the group can increase weekly sessions and welcome more players.

The volunteer-led group supports people living with long-term health conditions by offering inclusive walking football, physical activity and social connection.

Abbeymead Pirates meet on Wednesday mornings at Abbeydale Sports and Community Centre in Gloucestershire. Team members live with conditions such as cancer and Parkinson's, and some are recovering from injury.

Councillor Andrew Gravells awarded the funding and said the group makes a real difference to people’s health and wellbeing.

The Grassroots Neighbourhood Fund provides local councillors with funding to support community projects that improve wellbeing and resilience.
