These sessions are part of the Community Trust’s wider Neurological Disorders programme, which is specifically designed for individuals currently receiving or awaiting treatment for Parkinson’s disease.
The programme provides an inclusive and welcoming environment where everyone can take part and thrive, offering activities such as social walking football and chair‑based exercise.
Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological condition that affects movement and coordination. Treatments are available, but there is currently no cure. Research shows that exercise can improve symptoms and provide valuable social connection for those living with the condition.
Derby County Community Trust’s ‘Parkie Rams’ have built a strong bond while taking part in nationwide walking football tournaments and regular training sessions.
Ward and Allen joined one of these sessions at Willows Sports Centre, which included a warm‑up, passing drills, and a competitive Team Ward vs Team Allen shooting challenge.
The session finished with a Walking Football match, where Team Ward secured a 4-2 win.
Health Team Leader, Luke Wilkinson said; “There are a lot of Derby fans here, so to see the First Team players coming down and getting stuck in is nice, and it’s nice for the players as well.”
Reflecting on the visit, Joe Ward said; “It’s really good. It’s always good to give back and come and see what they are getting up to.”
