Walking footballers raise £3,200 for two charities

A WALKING football team in Sonning Common raised £3,200 for two charities in memory of late team members, writes Lily Shanagher.

The team is part of Rotherfield United FC and most of the players are more than 60 years old.

The team raised the money with a range of events, including curry nights, a music night, games, a day at Newbury racecourse and sponsorship from local businesses.

The money was divided equally between Sue Ryder and Mesothelioma UK in honour of teammates Cliff Stevens and James Watkins, who passed away in 2022 from cancer and mesothelioma respectively.

Mr Watkins, who used to run the village hardware shop, Heath & Watkins, in Wood Lane, spent his latter time at home being cared for by nurses from Sue Ryder. The cheques were presented by club chairman Ian Massey before a practice session at Bishopswood sports ground to Mr Watkins’s widow, Jean, and Sue Soffe, senior community fundraiser for Sue Ryder Thames Valley.
