A lifelong football icon has taken on a central role in reviving a local team.
As her 70th birthday approaches on Wednesday, December 10, Bev Maull has shown no intention of slowing down her dedication to the sport.
Instead of retreating into a quieter chapter of life, she has reignited her connection with football by stepping back onto the pitch through the increasingly popular sport of walking football.
For more than 50 years, Mrs Maull has been intrinsically linked with the Swindon Spitfires, one of the pioneering women’s and girls’ football clubs in the country.
After a successful trial, she joined the team in 1970 and has since been integral to the club’s growth, stability, and team spirit.

For half a century, Bev has been an almost continual presence on and around the pitch as she has served in virtually every role: player, coach, manager, club secretary, welfare officer, fundraiser, organiser, and even kit washer.
But now walking football, a slower-paced, highly accessible form of the game, has brought her back to the club.
Her late husband Chris, who was just as much of a cornerstone of the club and sadly passed away from Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), was her partner in life and football.
Together, they fostered a sense of community, inclusivity, and opportunity, ensuring women and girls in Swindon had a place to play the sport they loved.
The recent interest in walking football not only helps keep Bev active but also serves as an inspiration to reignite the Swindon Spitfires women’s section.
This shows the tenacity and never-ending enthusiasm she holds for the sport and club she loves dearly.
