Somerset FA’s Women’s Walking Football League started in January 2025 with 9 teams keen to take part. The league was created following a successful season of hosting women’s walking football festivals for teams to play some localised friendly matches, and these festivals still take place with a focus on supporting new and developing teams.
The 9 teams who have all been brilliant this season for the newly formed league are:

- Cheddar Women WFC
- Clevedon United WWFC
- Frome Flyers WFC
- Somer Valley Strikers WFC
- Taunton & District Women WFC

The league committee was formed with representatives from each team and this committee were key to setting the constitution and format of the competition that was played. Each team played in 4 league fixture days, consisting of 4 games per fixture day and over the course of the season, played each team twice.
The final league fixture day played on Sunday 15th June, was an exciting game as the inaugural league cup was all to play for with quite a few teams still in the running to potentially lift the cup!
Regardless of the ultimate competition and hopes to win the trophy, all the teams played with the right spirit, and many of the teams have got to know each other well through Somerset’s walking football festivals and other opportunities.
We are delighted to announce the Somerset FA’s Women’s Walking Football League champions are Taunton & District Women’s WFC. As the table shows, it was very close at the top and congratulations to Bristol Badgers Overs WFC for league runners up, together with Clevedon Town WFC coming a very close 3rd place.
Julia Tibbs, Taunton & District Women’s WFC Player said: ‘As a club we are absolutely buzzing to have won the first ever Somerset FA Women’s Walking Football League. If there is one cup we wanted to win, it was this one. When we set up in 2022, we were the first all-women’s club in Somerset and there were no leagues or other Somerset teams to play. The sport has grown so much in this time and the momentum will continue, I am sure. This league has been brilliant, and it’s been amazing to watch the growth and standard of the other teams.”

Rachael Lawler-Edwards, Women & Girls Football Development Officer from Somerset FA said: ‘We are proud of the league and the teams who have been instrumental in helping us set up the first ever Women’s Walking Football League in Somerset. The teams, the players and the coaches have all been fantastic and worked together to create the league and we are already looking forward to next season. Registrations are open for next 25/26 season and encourage any walking football teams to get in touch to be part of it! We have exciting plans to increase the number of teams in the league and look at a new format of Division 1 and Division 2 to start to support teams with the level of competition they will play within the league.’
