Tony Brown’s journey with County in the Community’s Walking Football programme is a powerful example of how sport and social connection can transform lives.

At 61, Tony is a devoted husband, father, foster parent, and grandfather who has carried the weight of significant personal loss and long‑term mental health challenges.

For years he struggled silently, particularly after the sudden loss of his mother and the disappearance of his father when Tony was just 20.

When he first attempted to attend a walking football session, his confidence was so low that he twice turned back at the door.

But on his third try, Tony stepped inside—and everything began to change. The programme quickly became a safe and supportive space where he could focus on his own wellbeing.

Physically, he grew fitter than he had been in years, but the biggest impact was the boost to his mental health. Walking football helped Tony open up, talk through his struggles, and release emotions he had long carried alone.

As his confidence grew, so did his sense of purpose. Tony now runs sessions three times a week, supported by his son Jack and foster son David.

He has built strong friendships, found renewed resilience, and feels better equipped to support the children in his care. Grateful and energized, Tony says this journey has truly changed his life.
