People With Dementia Get A Kick Out Of New Walking Football Sessions

Regular games of walking football have been set up in Petersfield to help people living with dementia.

The first match was played at the Taro Leisure Centre on Monday 16 May and more sessions are planned on a fortnightly basis. The next event will take place at 11am on Monday 30 May.

The scheme was launched by Jeff Williams, of Dementia Friends Petersfield, and Duncan Cameron, Owner and Director of Right at Home care with the support of East Hampshire District Council. The Taro Leisure Centre offered the use of the sports hall for free.

Mr Williams said sport and physical activity can have a huge, beneficial impact on people with dementia.

“They say what’s good for the heart is good for the brain, so anything that stimulates the body and gets the muscles moving is going to stimulate the brain too,” he said.

“That’s very important for people with dementia as a stimulated brain is a healthy brain.
