Men’s Health Week – What is it about walking football?

22 Jun 2025 1 min read No comments General

The source of the enthusiastic hollering and yelling Bramley residents may have heard last Friday morning turned out to be coming from behind the Black Lion Pub, Broad Lane.

It was Bramley Walking Wanderers, a mixed walking football team, revelling in their weekly Friday morning walking kick about.

This week the Wanderers were playing against Bramley Elderly Action’s ‘All Star’ Men’s Team.

The two teams were sweating it out in support of Men’s Health Week, clearly demonstrating the advantages of maintaining fitness levels and how football can be enjoyed at any age. Seemingly having great vocal cords is an added bonus.

Following a well fought match in the sweltering heat, the Wanderers proved victorious, only just though – by one goal. All Stars ‘wuz robbed’.

Your Backyard organisation runs the walking football; it is free and meets every Friday morning at 10am. If anyone is interested in going along, please contact Your Back Yard on 0113 229 0260 FURTHER INFO: https://www.facebook.com/Yourbackyardcic/

And afterwards the sweaty warriors laughed, slapped each other’s backs and celebrated together at the community centre, no doubt comparing game highlights, discussing tactics and arguing about who scored the best goal.

So Bramley residents, to clarify – ‘walking football is an adapted version of football, designed to be an inclusive and accessible activity for older people or for anyone who wants to play a slower version of football and keep fit in addition to enjoying the social side’.

You will certainly receive a warm friendly welcome should you decide to go and join them.

Or alternatively you may just consider keeping a pair of ear muffs at the ready for use on a Friday morning!
