On Saturday 20th April 2024 the first internationals between the EWFC and Malta took place at the Pembroke Athlete FC ground in Malta. After months of planning between Martin Woodroffe (spottedbymw), Tony Norton, Steve Mifsud and Drake Braunovic the EWFC teams arrived in Malta.
Both Malta and the EWFC had four teams and played 4 x 30-minute games each on a very hot day at the great facility of Pembroke Athleta FC.
The event was to help Malta promote the game of walking football in the hope that this will be the catalyst to get the game off the ground in a bigger way.
The games were all played in the right spirit , lots of goals, lots of talent on show and based on the feedback from the organisers , players and spectators it was a huge success both on and off the field.
On the pitch there was lots to celebrate with many players making their debuts.
Rob Wellby making his debut in goal for the over 60’s kept a clean sheet in all four games.
Steve Falconer on his debut was the joint top scorer alongside Mark Potts, both getting 4 goals each.
Both John Taylor and Billy Morrison made their debuts, played in all 4 games and contributed all over the pitch.
It was also great to see Frank White getting some game time after a long time out injured.
In the 50’s Gregg Marrett made his debut and helped the team win all their games with no goals conceded by the ever-reliable Carl Clinton.
The 55’s followed suit with Brendan Maxwell making his debut and again helping them win all their games with Ian Wilkinson keeping the net behind him empty apart from his Cap.
The 65’s team were mainly the normal Ewfc 70’s players but bolstered by the addition of two 69-year-olds Dennis Johnson and Tony Drinkell to ensure they didnt lose any of their games…
