The mixed walking football sessions are run by the Stirling Albion Foundation.

If a doctor gave a prescription for walking football instead of medicine it would help a lot of people.

“I have always played football and enjoyed it.

“But the main reason I do it now is for health and wellbeing,” he explains.

“It’s not only good for your physical health but it’s also very good for your mental health.

“It’s also great for bringing people together and having the women come along now to take part is brilliant.”

The Stirling Albion Foundation walking football group meets twice a week – on Monday and Wednesday mornings at 10am.

Around 30 members, men and women, whose ages range from 30 to 83, regularly play together as a group.

The games take place on the astroturf pitches behind Forthbank Stadium – which is the home of Stirling Albion Football Club.

Then afterwards they head to the club’s boardroom to have a chat over tea and coffee.

What is unique about the Stirling Albion Foundation walking football is that both men and women play together on the pitch.

The group’s ethos is very much about inclusivity.

Jennifer Currie-Jenkins, 42, from Causewayhead, has been taking part in walking football sessions for the past four years.

“The group originally started with men and then over a year or so ago, women started joining,” she explains.

“There are at least four to eight women at each session.

“It was quite daunting at first to think you’re coming along to a men’s group.

“This is because you’re never really sure how the men are going to take to women’s football.

“But everyone has been really welcoming at the Albion and we hope the number of women playing will continue to grow.”

The oldest woman in the group is Lesley Macinnes who is 69.

She has been taking part since the end of last year.

Lesley has also been playing with Braehead FC ladies walking football team for three years.

“I enjoyed playing football when I was nine but then stopped when I became a teenager,” she says.

“There was no opportunity really for girls to play football and I didn’t come across any opportunities to play as an adult.

“Then my sister came across walking football and sent me the details and that’s how I ended up here.”
