A walking football team established in Grimsby landed one of the top spots in a prestigious walking football tournament in which teams from across Europe compete.
Earlier this month, more than 30 members of The Ancient Mariners travelled from Beechwood Farm in Grimsby to Hull, where they set sail via ferry to Rotterdam in The Netherlands.
From there, they headed to Almelo, a city in the eastern part of the country, to take part in the annual Almelo City Cup event, in which hundreds of walking footballers from across Europe compete for the title.
Amazingly, the Ancient Mariners – which were split into three individual teams for the competition – came third, fourth and ninth out of 48 teams, some of which included former professional footballers who once played for teams in the German Bundesliga…
The minimum age to join Grimsby Ancient Mariners is 55, but the team also welcomes people of any age who are unable to play football due to injury.
