A thriving walking football group in Bishop’s Stortford has issued a call for women to join – with the ultimate goal to form a team.
Grange Paddocks Walking Football (GPWF) has gone from strength to strength since four men turned up at the leisure centre off Rye Street in 2023 for the first Friday session.
The group now has almost 60 members, many of whom regularly play on Fridays, and has a men’s team who meet on Mondays and play league matches.
Last October, GPWF sent two teams to play in a tournament in Murcia, Spain, and will repeat the trip this October with the aim of winning the trophy.
When Karen Hickmott turned up for a Friday session, group co-founder Terry Brown pledged to seek out more women to join her.
Karen, who has previously played for teams including Harlow Town, told the Indie she enjoyed her first session with the group. “I haven’t played football for 30 years, but I absolutely loved it,” she said.
The 66-year-old Stortford resident has just retired from her job in admin at Harlow Fields School and College and wanted something for herself as she spends a lot of time helping others.
A plea via the group’s Facebook page for women over 40 attracted two more players last week and Karen is keen to see more signing up. “It would be great to have someone [other than the men] to banter with,” she said.
The Friday sessions at Grange Paddocks run from 2pm to 3pm. For more details, see the Grange Paddocks Walking Football page on Facebook or contact Terry Brown on 07860 344805.
