Sintons is supporting the Newcastle United Foundation and Headway Tyneside to deliver free, weekly walking football sessions on Wednesdays, for people who have experienced a severe brain injury.
For the second year running, Sintons is sponsoring the weekly events, which help people stay active and socialise after a brain injury.
Andrew McGowan is the head of Sintons’ neurotrauma department and helps people access the support and rehabilitation they need after serious injury.
He said: “This walking football programme has proven to have huge mental and physical benefits and it can be an important part of people’s recovery after a serious injury.
“It’s important to me, and to all of our team, that everyone is able to access the rehabilitation they need and I hope that by lending our support to this programme, more people will be able to take part and feel the benefits.”
Liam, who takes part in the sessions, said: “It’s just the camaraderie, getting together with this group of people. It helps loads with my balance and my walking – you brain is engaged in walking but when you’ve got the ball at your feet, there’s so much more to concentrate on, it really tests your balance” …
The free walking football sessions take place at the Newcastle United Foundation’s community hub, NUCastle, which is a five-minute walk from St. James’ Park.
The sessions involve no running, jogging or heading and are designed to be a safe way people can enjoy football together, in mixed teams of up to 7-a-side.
