‘Concerning’ drop in UK women playing team sports as most quit by 21

A new study has found that just seven per cent of women in the UK currently take part in team sports – and the majority give up by the time they hit 21

Only a mere seven per cent of women in the UK engage in team sports, with most abandoning by the age of 21, reveals fresh research. The study, which surveyed 3,000 sporty women, discovered that seven out of ten believe it’s simpler for men to persist in playing team sports as they age.

Whilst numerous women regularly participate in team sports up until the age of 25, involvement plummets into single digits among women in their 30s, 40s and 50s. The primary obstacle was hectic schedules.

Work obligations and familial duties were pinpointed as the key reasons for quitting, with three-quarters of women confessing there are weeks when they grapple to squeeze in any exercise whatsoever.

The research was commissioned by AXA UK as part of its ‘Keep on Kicking’ campaign, which underscores the challenges women encounter in remaining active in team sports throughout various life stages.

The campaign also commemorates AXA’s sponsorship of this summer’s UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 in Switzerland and its backing for Women’s Walking Football across the UK.

The report emphasises pregnancy, menstruation, menopause, and a lack of opportunities compared to men as further obstacles. Traditional gender roles and childcare worries were also found to disproportionately impact women’s participation, with team sports often aimed more at men…

The study revealed that exercising women hit the gym three times a week, typically including twice with companions. It noted that of the ladies engaged in team sports, a whopping 84 percent yearn for more playtime.

On average, females dedicate slightly under an hour and a half each week to team sports, with football, basketball, and netball topping the popularity charts. Nonetheless, a staggering nine out of ten parents recognise the importance of being exercise role models for their progeny.
