CHSS and SFSA joint venture will save football lives – Get a free defibrillator

5 Jun 2025 1 min read No comments General

Senior football clubs all have defibrillators in place nowadays, and they are also a fairly common sight attached to buildings in towns and villages.  However, many football pitches across the country do not have access to one, meaning that there are hundreds of men and women taking part in strenuous physical activity that, very occasionally, ends in tragedy.  We’ve seen it in the professional game, where such an event gets a lot of publicity, but in the grassroots and, given the age range, especially walking football, people still die of cardiac arrest from time to time during or after matches.

Consequently, the SFSA and Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland have joined forces, pulling our resources in the form of grants from the Scottish Government to provide grassroots/walking football with the opportunity to get a defibrillator free of charge.  We already have orders from walking football, plus we are donating two to the Referees’ Associations and a further two to the women’s game.  This means we have about half a dozen left and these are now available on a first-come, first-served basis.

This valuable piece of life safe equipment costs approximately £1,000 and to qualify for receipt of the defibrillator, your club must identify three members of your team/group to participate in an online training course which provides both information in its operation and also confidence to use the defibrillator should such action be required. There is also a requirement to regularly maintain the equipment to ensure that it will operate as required if needed.

If your club could benefit, please contact Paul Goodwin at paulgoodwin@scottishfsa.org and he’ll be delighted to help.
