The Blackpool Supporters Trust Walking Football Over-50s team ensured history repeated itself after winning the prestigious Canaries Walking Football Tournament.

Having made the return journey to Tenerife in the defence of their crown, the 2024 champions again took top spot.

Last year’s winners began their title defence in style by recording a 3-1 victory over local side FC Las Chafiras, thanks to goals scored by captain Paul Sumner, player-manager Daz Meehan and Lee Rogers.

This was followed by a solid 2-0 win against Norwich, in which Steven Gough scored both of the Blackpool goals.

Gough was again at the double in giving them a 2-1 victory from a closely-contested match against Market Harborough.

That kept momentum high before the opening day concluded with a well-earned goalless draw against Bexley.

Day two saw Blackpool continue their impressive form, beginning with Gough securing a 1-1 draw against Grimsby.

Next up was a commanding 3-0 win over Sheppey Stags, which saw Gough score twice and Meehan also on target.

A 2-0 triumph over Aylesbury FC followed, Meehan and Rogers with the goals, as Blackpool finished top of their group and secured a place in the knockout stages.

Blackpool again played Bexley in the semi-final as Gough and Meehan gave them a 2-1 victory which booked their place in the final.

That saw them up against Norwich, with the final proving to be a tense and tactical encounter in which the teams cancelled out each other’s attacks.

It looked as if the game was destined for a penalty shootout but, with only three minutes remaining, Meehan handed Blackpool victory with a strike from 25 yards.

Meehan said: “The victory marks another proud moment for the Blackpool Supporters Trust Walking Football Over-50s team, demonstrating skill, teamwork, and determination throughout the tournament.”
