Bury FC walking football raised vital funds for hospice

A walking football tournament has raised vital funds for a local hospice.

Bury FC’s walking football team raised £105 for Bury Hospice during a round-robin tournament held at Gigg Lane on Sunday, March 8.

The tournament marked the team’s first round-robin games and saw teams from Bury, Bolton AFC, and North Manchester take part.

Michael Cartmell, who runs the walking football team alongside his cousin Martyn Bannister, said: “It proved to be a fantastic morning of football.

“There were excellent skills on show, plenty of friendly competition, and above all the kind of sportsmanship and camaraderie that makes walking football such a special part of our club.”

North Manchester were crowned winners but faced stiff competition from the Bury A team.

Mr Cartmell said he and Mr Bannister were inspired to take over coaching duties after the sessions were introduced by Casey Lynchey.

Mr Cartmell said: “As the sessions grew and Casey’s many commitments increased, she asked whether my cousin Martyn and I would consider taking over the running and coaching of walking football.

“As they say in modern parlance, it was a no-brainer.”

The morning raised £105 for Bury Hospice, a cause close to many of the team’s hearts.

Mr Cartmell said: “On behalf of everyone who took part, Martyn and I, along with team captain Alan, were proud to present the donation to Lisa Schofield at Bury Hospice.”

Those pictured in the cheque presentation included Alan Whittall (Bury FC walking football), Lisa Schofield (Bury Hospice), Michael Cartmell (Bury FC walking football coach), and Martyn Bannister (Bury FC walking football coach).

Mr Cartmell said: “Walking football at Bury FC continues to grow week by week, bringing people together through friendship, fitness and a shared love of the game.”

He also thanked those who contributed to the day’s success.

Mr Cartmell said: “Martyn and I would like to thank everyone who took part, as well as the officials who helped make the day such a success.

“A special mention must go to Callum and his assistant Liam, who oversaw the whole event and ensured everything ran like clockwork.”
