AN APPEAL has been made for people in Bromsgrove to try walking hockey seven years after the town introduced the sport to the world.
On January 9, 2017, Bromsgrove Hockey Club launched the sport after a resident who attended the previous year’s ‘Back to Hockey’ event felt she needed something slower to play.
She suggested ‘Walking Hockey’ to Alan Gormley, Bromsgrove Hockey Club’s head development coach, and he gave the idea a six-week pilot programme of sessions.
Since then, the sport has spread and is now played across the country as well as in countries such as Australia and the United States of America.
Over 100 people now play Bromsgrove’s six walking sports – cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders and rugby – every week.
The club plays walking hockey every Monday evening and Thursday morning at the Bromsgrove Cricket Hockey and Tennis Club on St Godwald’s Road.
Call Alan on 07731369942 or email alan@sport-edge.co.uk for more information.
