“When our name was read out, we were overjoyed” – Head of Community at Alvechurch Kevin Redmond, as Alvechurch pick up the prestigious National Non-League Community Club of the Year award.

The Alvechurch in the Community project started four years ago with “a small disability session, which then expanded to two pan-disability sessions, then to three.”

Today, they now have sessions including walking football, walking football for Parkinson’s, a mental health team, disability team, growth in the female game, school coaching and Nathan Redmond holiday camps.

Alongside these sessions, Alvechurch bring in coaches from the community to help run these sessions, with several coaches coming through the pan-disability and mental health sessions to now run the sessions, highlighting the significance of Alvechurch’s role in their community.

Head of Community at Alvechurch Kevin Redmond has also set out his vision for the future with Alvechurch in the Community:

“I’d like this to become the disability hub of the region, because unfortunately a lot of people have to travel for certain disabilities.

I’d like to be a bit more disability specific, I’d like to get the blind and the deaf involved, cerebral palsy as well.

Parkinsons is going good but we would like to expand that as well, the more disabilities we can bring in the more people we can get into a social circle.”

The Church also boasts 55 youth teams, and Head of Youth Ricardo Richards said on their award:

“I was proud as it’s about time the club got the recognition is deserves.

“The club does a lot of work with disabilities, community work, we have an array of teams from Saturday’s, Sunday’s, girls, walking football, over 35’s.

“Alvechurch is special because it’s not in a posh area, but what it does is it brings kids together to play football, gives a family feel, we have the clubhouse where people can come in eat food, drink after games.

We also have great facilities with the 3G and grass pitches, and with the amount of kids we have coming through, which is over 500, that is why it’s so special.”
