Salisbury FC Walking Football Club players are heading to Sicily to showcase the sport’s transformative health benefits.
In October, the team will participate in a medical conference and football tournament in Palermo, discussing the physical, mental and social advantages of walking football with medical professionals and football officials.
Their presentations will highlight personal stories of players regaining fitness and confidence after severe health issues such as heart surgery, brain injury and cancer.
The invitation follows Sicily’s growing interest in developing football opportunities for older players.
Since its inception in 2015, walking football in Salisbury has flourished, with more than 140 men and women, aged from their 50s to late 80s, participating in volunteer-led weekly sessions across the city.
These sessions, held at Five Rivers Health and Wellbeing Centre, Wilton Road and Sarum Academy, aim to keep people active while fostering a sense of community.
Salisbury teams also compete in Hampshire and the West of England, with some players achieving success at county and national levels.
The club is led by Mark Potts and Chris Davey-McLean, alongside president Jeff Maund, and maintains close links with Salisbury FC, The Whites.
