Walking football can make a real contribution to both mental and physical health for older people, men and women.

More and more people these days are finding that taking up walking football is a great way to keep fit and meet new friends without spending hours in the gym.

As well as the social benefits it can help by reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke as well as improving blood pressure and postural balance, lowering cholesterol, improving blood sugar levels and bone density, help you in losing a bit of weight and cutting the odds of developing type two diabetes.

But it’s not all about health and fitness… walking football is fun and gives us all a chance to take part in organised team sport which expands your social life, lifts your mood and reduces stress.

Eastbourne United Walking Football Club currently run several practice sessions a week for both men and women. They take part in competitive leagues for the over-50s, 60s and 70s men. They are now looking for new members to form a fun and competitive squad of women as well, but a few more women are needed for a team to enter a competitive league.
Beginners are very welcome. If you’ve never played before, the club will run some skills training sessions to help you develop your abilities. If you’re under 40 you’re also welcome to take part in practice sessions though you wouldn’t be able to play in competitive matches.
Practice sessions are held on Monday and Thursdays from 10am to midday with free coffee or tea on Thursdays, at the Oval, Channel View Road, Eastbourne with first class facilities and 3G pitch.
They’re also offering Tuesday evening sessions from 7pm to 8pm to help those that work. It’s only £5 per session and the first session is free.
Check out the Facebook page ‘Walking Football at Eastbourne United’ and send a message or call Jo or Steve on 07466 564206 if you have any questions or for more details – or pop along to the Oval during one of the practice sessions.
