It’s been a fantastic week at Weston-super-Mare AFC Walking Football, where we achieved 100 attendees across our sessions this week for the first time ever.

We run several sessions each week, including Men’s, Women’s, Mixed and Parkinson’s at the Optima Stadium.

More than 70 players have come together in Shoebury for a 12-hour charity football match in support of Prostate Cancer UK. The 12-hour Walking Football Tournament saw players score more than 125 goals while raising almost £5,000 for the national charity. The event took place at the SECAT Community Football Pitches at Shoebury High School and ran continuously from 9am until 9pm.

On Wednesday, our Walking Footballers took part in the annual Eastbourne tournament. We were delighted when our hosts agreed to hold a minute’s applause for club legend Steve Churcher and we thank them for this. This is always a challenging tournament with the best of Sussex teams attending and this year proved to be no different. It was an over 50s tournament but as usual due to work commitments we sent in the main a 60s and 65 team to represent our club, with a few of our younger players.

A six-hour walking football fundraising event in aid of the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDA) will take place in Cork next week. The event, organised by members of the Mardyke Walking Football Group, will take place on Saturday, July 25, from 10am to 4pm at the Mardyke Sports Grounds in UCC. Des Meade, who is one of the event organisers, said they are hoping to raise up to €5,000 for the IMNDA.

With membership numbers ballooning as high as 64 in less than 12 months, the group are offering a wide range of people with a much needed social and physical boost.
