Lace up for a second chance at the beautiful game
Estepona Walking Football Club has built something special since forming back in April. Rather than giving up on the game for good after years away from competitive sport, local men have found a way back onto the pitch through the format designed specifically for their age group.
Formed to promote healthy living, social connection and active lifestyles among older adults, the club now fields two squads — an Over-50s team and an Over-60s team, both of which recorded convincing victories in their opening matches of the new era, just months after their very first training session took place in July.
No running, just smart football
No need to strap up your achilles as walking football strips away the sprinting, tackling and physical contact that put so many players off the game as they get older, replacing it with a slower, tactical version of the sport that still delivers a proper workout. Matches are absolutely still competitive, but the emphasis is focused on enjoyment, fitness and friendship rather than physical strain. All abilities are welcome, so rusty skills or a lack of match fitness are no barrier to joining in.
From September, both squads move to a new home ground in Cancelada, where they will play their first season in the Avalon League, taking on teams from across the region.
Building more than a team
Regular exercise and weekly sport are proven to sharpen fitness, ease isolation and support mental wellbeing as people grow older, and the club has made social connection a founding aim rather than an afterthought. Fresh friendships and a reason to get outdoors each week matter just as much as results, and there is always time for a post-match laugh and drink.
How to get involved
Men aged between 50 and 70 who fancy rediscovering the sport they love can get in touch directly with organiser James on +44 7787 808479 or 691 901976, via the contact form at Estepona WFC’s website, or through WhatsApp. No experience is required — just enthusiasm and a willingness to give it a go.
