Walking football star selected for East of Scotland team

A walking footballer from the Borders has been selected to represent the East of Scotland region in a cross-Scotland contest.

Craig Douglas will line up against the West of Scotland at Toryglen Football Centre, near Hampden Park, in Glasgow on Friday, June 12.

The 69-year-old Gala Fairydean Rovers goalkeeper is likely to be the oldest player in the 10-man squad for the game.

He was selected following trials at Oriam Sports Complex in April and May this year.

Douglas said: “I’m delighted to have been chosen for the squad and looking forward to the match.

“Walking football is a great way to keep fit, but it’s not just the exercise it’s about being part of a team and keeping the brain working.

“It’s something I would recommend, and we are always keen to get new players.

“We play every Monday and Thursday, 2pm to 3.45pm on the pitch at Netherdale. Any newcomers are welcome, just turn up and bring your boots.”

Douglas is no stranger to big games either, with the stopper playing a key role in earning Gala over-65s Walking Football a fourth-place finish in a European tournament in Mallorca.

The team beat Oxford United in the quarter-finals 2-0 before losing the semi-final to Gibraltar Walking Football Team on penalties.

They went on to face Leyton Orient in the third-place game, losing again on penalties to seal a finish in fourth.
