Scan to Smile: Women’s walking football helps Zoë find confidence and fitness

12 Feb 2026 2 min read No comments General

Scan to Smile is an EFL initiative designed to lift spirits by sharing uplifting stories from communities across the country, shining a light on how football can support health, wellbeing and confidence far beyond the pitch.

Zoë joined Preston North End Community and Education Trust’s weekly women’s walking football sessions after retiring early and wanting to become more active, despite having never played football before.

Zoë said: “I had never played football before and was quite nervous about team sports following negative experiences in school. After retiring early, I wanted to get fitter but didn’t know where to start.”

Encouraged by a friend, Zoë decided to attend the Trust’s women’s walking football sessions and quickly found herself part of a welcoming and supportive environment.

She added: “A friend suggested I join her at Preston North End Community and Education Trust’s weekly women’s walking football sessions. Right from the start everyone was so welcoming. I’ve learned the rules, played my first competitive match and even scored a few goals.”

Walking football is designed to support adults to stay active in a fun, inclusive and social setting, helping participants improve fitness, confidence and wellbeing at their own pace.

For Zoë, the sessions have become about much more than just physical activity: “Now I feel fitter, more confident and really enjoy being part of the group,” she said. “I’m so grateful to Preston North End Community and Education Trust for creating such a welcoming space.”

Zoë’s story is one of many being shared as part of the EFL’s Scan to Smile campaign, celebrating the positive impact of football club charities and the opportunities they create for people of all ages and backgrounds to improve their health, happiness and sense of belonging.

On matchday, supporters will be encouraged to scan QR codes displayed around the stadium to unlock uplifting stories, shining a light on the life changing impact of community programmes delivered by EFL clubs.

Trevor Birch, Chief Executive at the EFL said: “Scan to Smile is about harnessing the power of football to lift spirits and share real stories of hope. Behind every Club are people whose lives have been positively changed through the work and dedication of their local EFL Club charity.

“This initiative gives supporters the chance to see that impact firsthand and reminds us that football truly is a force for good.”
