History was made by the Maccabi GB Walking Football Club when they became the first overseas walking football team to visit Israel.

Club President Stuart Lustigman, who was involved in establishing walking football in Israel in 2021, organised the tour.

The squad of nine players was captained by club Chairman Gary Briggs, who said: “This was an incredible experience for the whole squad and partners. Three intensive days of touring and education, plus the two matches made for a memorable trip”.

The other squad members were David Fordham, John Levy, Ashley Perez, Tony Platman, Howard Skolnick, David Wynick and guest Oded Breda (director of Walking Football Israel).

The group, who were based at Kfar Maccabiah, enjoyed three days of touring which included Maccabi World Union’s Sports Museum, Beit Halochem, the Museum of the Jewish People (ANU) and the Ayalon Institute. One day was dedicated to visiting the Gaza Envelope where the group encountered the devastation at Kibbutz Kfar Aza, the Tkuma Car Cemetery, and the memorial to the Sderot Police Station, while they also spent time at the Nova Music Festival memorial site, hearing the harrowing story from survivor Yasmin Porat.

Lustigman said: “After such an emotional experience, it felt right to finish the day with a match against local team Hof Ashkelon, especially after losing the opening tour match against Herzliya.”

Maccabi took a three-goal lead through Howard Skolnick and two goals from Oded Breda, before the hosts levelled the scores. The game could have gone either way but with the last kick of the match, Tony Platman secured a winner for Maccabi Stollers.
