England’s Over 50s Retain Nations Cup

England’s Over 50s men’s walking football team have completed a magnificent victory in Spain to retain the World Nations Cup.

A total of nine wins and one draw – in their opening group fixture against the hosts nation – ensured the trophy was once again lifted by their captain Steve Crilley.

England’s performances and consistency in Torrevieja, on the south east coast, proved too strong for all other nations as their movement and touch prevailed.

The strength in depth in the fierce Spanish heat was vital, as every outfield squad player registered a goal.

After winning a the toughest group of eight by five clear points, they disposed of Wales 2-0 and then Spain 3-2 in a fiercely competitive semi-final.

The final against Italy was a tense affair. After a brilliant David Dickson strike after only eight seconds was ruled out for running, Mark Caven – whose netted a vital brace in the semi – turned sharply on the edge of the box in the second half to smash the only goal of the game.

It was enough to ensure they retained the trophy they won in 2023, when the inaugural tournament was held at St George’s Park.

England were dominant throughout this year’s competition, with the midfield trio of Gary Groom, Justin Lowe and Dickson influencing many of the games.

David Cafferty was imperious in defence and some important saves from goalkeeper Barry Gavahan late on in the final proved important.

After the victory, manager David Castle was delighted with the commitment from his players.

‘It’s difficult for me to single out players when the level of performance from the whole 12 has been beyond what I could have hoped for,’ said Castle.

‘Everyone has played their part from all my management and coaching team right through to our physio, it’s like we are living the dream.

‘Walking Football has change so many lives for the better – the fitness levels and mental health support that it gives to us all is better than any of us could have foreseen.’
