Ayr United’s walking football maestros take Europe by storm

Ayr United’s walking footballers are celebrating a stunning double European triumph.

A 16-man party from the Ayr United Football Academy’s Walking Football programme returned from the prestigious 10th Algarve Cup in Portugal with two trophies.

The Ayr Over 60s were crowned Tournament Champions at their age group after a brilliant eight-game unbeaten run over the two days of competition, while the Ayr Over 50s lifted the consolation Wood Award for the second year on the trot.

It was the seventh time since 2016 that the Academy have sent teams to the tournament, which is held at the Browns Sports Complex in Vilamoura, with the 60s’ triumph the standout performance over the past nine years.

The win is a magnificent honour and ideal way to mark the 10th anniversary of the Walking Football programme at the Academy this year, as well as the 20th anniversary of the overall Academy at the Somerset Park club…

Freddie Brown’s early penalty was the vital goal for the 60s as they beat Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 in their final. And veteran keeper Billy Bentley was a real standout, keeping six clean sheets in the eight games and making four brilliant shootout saves as they won both their quarter and semi-finals on penalties.

Keith Stewart starred for the 50s with a hat-trick in their final, after Alistair Fleming had netted a great long-range opener.
