Birmingham-based football club, Boldmere St. Michaels FC, was awarded a £1,000 grant in 2022 as part of Greene King IPA’s Proud to Pitch In scheme to strengthen engagement in the local community.

The Proud to Pitch In fund has helped more than 370 clubs, reaching its £1million goal for funding this year and supporting more sports clubs across the UK.

Boldmere St. Michaels FC recognised a unique opportunity to engage women over the age of 30 in the local community, in particular mums who have spent years supporting their children from the sidelines.

The Proud to Pitch In grant has enabled Boldmere St. Michaels FC to support Walking Mikes Women, the club’s women’s walking football team, as well as growing the team to be self-sufficient, sustainable, and a great asset to the club.

Heidi Boswell, Women’s Walking Football Lead, said:“Our local walking football team isn’t just a sport – it’s an opportunity for people to exercise, meet new people, get out in the fresh air and build their confidence. Being able to set up the women’s team and watch it grow to having more than 25 regular members has been amazing – it’s a real community club.”

Gemma Woolnough-Smith, Marketing Manager for Greene King IPA, said: “Boldmere St. Michaels FC’s continued determination to encourage women in the community to be active, build confidence and connect with likeminded people is the grassroots impact which goes beyond just the pitch. It’s clubs like this that Greene King IPA champions and supports – those acting at the heart of our communities making a difference.”

Proud to Pitch In

Proud to Pitch In is an initiative that has offered cash grants to grassroots and community sports clubs across the UK. Funding from the sale of pints and can packs sold in participating pubs and retail stores has supported local clubs from the ground up and provided them with the tools they need to continue to play the sports they love.
