A women’s walking football club has won £2,000 in a national competition.
The Absolute Radio contest, Ode to your Club, required entrants to submit a 300-word ode explaining why their club deserved the prize.
Melanie, a player at the Lilliput Ladies Walking Football Club, encouraged her teammates to participate after her husband, John, heard about the competition on the radio.
Caroline, one of the team’s players, crafted a winning ode.

Her piece celebrated the team’s dedication to football and highlighted the influence of their player-manager, Toko.
Caroline was announced as the winner on Friday, June 27 and read her ode live on the Dave Berry Breakfast Show to an audience of 2.5 million.
This victory is a huge boost for the club, which formed in January 2024.
The club is now hoping to use its win to inspire more women to join the sport.
It welcomes players of all ages and experience levels, offering a chance to enjoy “fun, friendship and footie.”
The club trains at Rossmore Leisure Centre every Tuesday, from 7pm to 8pm.
With the Lionesses set to defend their title in the Euros, the club sees this as a chance to further promote women’s football.
