A WALKING football team in Sonning Common has raised £5,000 for two heart charities.
The team was formed almost 10 years ago as part of Rotherfield United FC and most players are in their 60s and 70s.
It raised the money from donations added on to match fees, as well as their regular social meetings, including trips to the pub, a dinner, golf tournament and cycling days.
They chose to support the British Heart Foundation as well as the cardiac rehab unit at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, both of which have supported several players who have had heart-related illnesses.
About 30 members of the team were present when the money was handed over at the Bishopswood Sports Ground in Gallowstree Common before their game on Thursday morning last week.
Alison Mackie, the fundraising manager for the British Heart Foundation in Oxfordshire, accepted a cheque for £2,631…
Since it was launched in 2016, membership has gradually grown to almost 70, who can elect to join as many matches and social outings as they wish each year.
The team was put together by Ian Massey with the support of Sonning Common Health Centre as a way to promote health and wellbeing within the community.
It is open to men over the age of 50 and women over the age of 40. For more information visit https://rotherfieldfc.com/team/walking-football/
