Peterborough United Foundation @poshfoundation: Steven’s Journey with Walking Football 4 Me: A Path to Personal Growth and Community Impact
We caught up with Steven, a participant turned volunteer on our Walking Football 4 Me session – for adults with visible and non-visible disabilities.
Steven’s involvement with Walking Football 4 Me began in April 2024 when he joined as a participant, drawn by his lifelong passion for football. Having played the sport in various capacities over the years, Steven was eager to get back into the game, even if it was in a more relaxed and accommodating format like walking football. What he hadn’t anticipated, however, was the profound impact this decision would have on both his personal development and the wider community.
From the outset, Steven expressed his enthusiasm not only for participating in the sessions but also for contributing in a more meaningful way. He quickly shared with the Foundation his desire to volunteer, motivated by a strong sense of giving back to the community and helping others enjoy the sport as much as he does. Recognising his passion and potential, the Foundation conducted the necessary background checks and assessments to ensure that Steven was well-suited for a volunteer role.
With everything in place, Steven began his volunteering journey, and it wasn’t long before his presence became a cornerstone of the weekly sessions. Each week, Steven’s confidence blossomed, and he took on increasingly significant responsibilities. Initially, he supported the coaches with setting up the sessions and engaging with participants, but over time, he began to take a more active role in leading activities and facilitating games…
